A source of Comfort

Bougainvillea. A source of comfort. My parents and older sister migrated to NY from Jamaica in March, 1963. My younger brother and I were left behind with relatives and migrated later in August, 1963 to be with them once they found a place of their own to live and were more settled. I was 8 years old then and would walk and take the bus to and from school in Kingston.

I remember the bougainvillea along the way, walking to and from home. Bright and colorful. They made me feel happy. I missed my mother, father and sister every day. These pics are of the bougainvillea in the backyard of my neighbor’s home and they hang over the wall in my back yard. I can see them when I look or walk outside and they remind me of those days that I was a young girl, feeling a little sad and lonely at times. They continue to be a source of happiness.
